Pre-heat your oven to 375F.
You can take the butter out of the refrigerator for a half hour to soften it and make it easier to work with, but do not melt it; it changes the chemistry (baking is chemistry) and you won't get cookies.
Beat the sugar and butter together, then add the molasses and egg and mix them in well before adding the flour and spices.
Mix and form into smallish balls; space them out on a couple of parchment-covered cookie sheets and bake at 375°F for 12-15 minutes.
Cool them on a rack.
