Heat the olive oil in a large stockpot. Add the onions and parsley and cook until the onion is translucent (about five minutes).
Add the garlic and herbs and cook for another two minutes, then add the tomato sauce, wine, clam juice, crab butter and water, sugar, and pepper, and simmer it all for 15–45 minutes.
Add the crab halves, return the sauce to the boil, and simmer, covered, for about ten minutes until the crab is heated through.
Serve with the bread.
